Drakenstein, Western Cape

the Cape is the fastest growing
green economy
worldwide

The Western Cape has extraordinary natural resources, expertise and people. The province plays a pioneering role in Southern Africa agriculture and has become a leader in sustainable growing methods.
The Western Cape is well-positioned to take advantage of several green energy sources, including solar and wind power. The region is known for its abundant sunshine and strong winds, which make it an ideal location for the development of large-scale solar and wind farms. In recent years, the Western Cape has made significant strides in transitioning to greener energy sources, with several major renewable energy projects already in operation and more in the planning stages.

Investing in green energy not only helps to reduce the carbon footprint of the Western Cape but also creates new opportunities for job creation and economic growth in the region.
Effective
Water
usage

Effective use of water is crucial in areas with limited water resources, such as the Western Cape, to ensure that we conserve this precious resource for future generations while also meeting our current needs.
Southern Africa is a
water-scarce
region

60%
of water is used for food

In the Western Cape, food producers are better equipped to use less water in the production of food compared to other food producing regions.
Day Zero
From 2015 to 2018, the Western Cape experienced the worst drought on record. The City of Cape Town and Provincial Government mandated severe water restrictions, limiting the daily water usage per household and business.

The government introduced a number of water management strategies, such as drilling new boreholes, upgrading existing infrastructure, and implementing new technologies to reduce water loss through leaks and evaporation.

'Day Zero' forced the the Western Cape to shift towards alternative water sources, such as
desalination
,
wastewater recycling
, and
groundwater extraction
.
